Laura Corbeth

Laura Corbeth has been a guest blogger on my site and a friend for several years.

I first met Laura when I read her book, My Courage To Tell. It was her personal account of living with a childhood bully. The book resonated with me and from there we found we had so much in common.

Laura is a talented individual and gives so much to so many. She loves animals which is a major plus in my view. Her book is a wonderful account of how she found her way through facing a childhood bully.

Question 1: Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.

Sure, Don. I live in Ontario, Canada with my husband of twenty-four years, and two rescued dogs. My son is doing his Masters’s program which I am really proud of. I am a successful entrepreneur, having owned, along with my husband, a graphic design and marketing business for over two decades. I am really passionate about our business! I am also an avid animal lover and I have volunteered with various dog rescue organizations – and want to “save them all.” Recently, I’ve become an advocate against bullying and try and educate what I’ve learned in the past few years.

Question 2: What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?

The name of my book is My Courage to Tell, Facing a Childhood Bully and Reclaiming My Inner Child. The revised version of my book was released last year.

My Courage to Tell is the story of my struggle to overcome a childhood of abuse at the hands of my cruel, bullying brother. Memories of this abuse had remained deeply buried until my Aunt died, leaving her estate that I must settle with my brother. As I tried to administer the estate, I was plagued by symptoms of post-traumatic stress. Suppressed memories started to rise to the surface.

But what really was the catalyst for the book was my mother stopped speaking with me nearly four years ago when I had asked her to tell the truth about my childhood. That inspired me to write about dysfunctional families and what can happen later on in our years.

Question 3: What are you working on now, and what are you reading now?

I’ve got a few things planned for this year. I really would like to start interviewing people to give them an opportunity to tell their own story as well as interview doctors and psychologists. I am also trying to find time to put a webinar together to help people set boundaries and learn to say no. My biggest problem is time.

Right now I’m reading Dr. Gabor Maté’s book When the Body Says No: The Cost of Hidden Stress.

Question 4: Where do you get your ideas?

I do a lot of research and read a lot of publications on bullying and childhood trauma. And I have been very inspired by seeing a great psychologist who validated psychological abuse and bullying.

Question 5: What is the best advice you have ever heard?

The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go. ― Dr. Seuss, I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!

Read. You will learn. Research and you will learn. Educate yourself.

Question 6: What other authors are you friends with, and how do they help you become a better writer?

You have become my friend. Thank you for that. And I have had support from Dana Arcuri and Sandra Jeffs who have written about their abuse.

What makes me a better writer is by blogging and guest blogging. I keep up my writing skills now that I have found my voice.

Question 7: What’s next for you as a writer?

I think to keep up with my blog and making it more engaging. More videos and interviewing others.

Also, I’m a graphic designer and would love to help others with their media campaigns and social media graphics.

Question 8: Where can someone purchase your books, and how can they reach you?

The book is available on Amazon, Chapters, and Barnes And Noble sites. And if people want to reach me, they can send me a message on my blog.
